Penguins start 2013 on a winning note

Heathmont Baseball Club has started off their premiership defense in solid style, defeating Watsonia Saints at home on Saturday 6 to 3.

After Heathmont unfurled their 2012 premiership flag, starting pitchers for the day were Jon Kennedy from Heathmont and Gareth Formisano for Watsonia. At the end of a tight first innings, it was nil all.
The pitching dual continued before Brad Harman got the first run on the board for Heathmont in the second innings.
In to the fifth innings it was 1-1, before Heathmont scored again to go one up.
Both clubs changed pitchers with Luke Ables coming on for Watsonia and Mitch Kennedy for Heathmont.
Watsonia were then able to get away to a 3-2 lead before bringing on Heath Pendlebury to pitch.
In the final innings, with two out, Josh Hendricks of Heathmont hit a grand slam home run to take the game to 6-3, which was the final score.
Best players for Heathmont were Jon Kennedy, Brad Harman, Josh Hendricks and John Edwards and Watsonia’s best were Gareth Formisano, Luke Ables and Jarod Rogers.
Heathmont secretary Mark Le Grew said it was a great start to the season for the club, who were hoping to build on their successes from last season.
“It was a big day for us with Lee Hogan who moved to Queensland at the end of last season coming down to throw out the first pitch,” he said.
“Watsonia are a young team with lots of talented players, and I think they will go a long way this season”.
“We are the reigning premiers with a number of Melbourne Aces playing for us and they just came up against a quality team today,” he said.
Watsonia vice president Tim Frost, who also played in the game, said their club had the reigning premiers beat for the majority of the game, but despite the score they were happy with the game.
“Just one swing of the bat, and they had the game,” he said.
“But it was a great game and all five pitchers on the day did a really good job.”
In other A Grade results, GMBC defeated Greensborough in the traditional Heritage Day season opener 12 to 3, Knox defeated Croydon 12 to 2 and Ringwood defeated Research 9 to 4.
Heathmont travel to Greensborough next week and Watsonia take on Knox at home.
